What Happens During a Root Canal?

Most people fear root canals, but thanks to modern dentistry, root canals are not scary like they used to be. The treatment eases the pain from infection and saves your tooth! Highland Oaks Family Dentistry in Keller, TX provides gentle root canal therapy to ease your pain and remove the infection.

What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment

When you come in for root canal therapy, Dr. Spencer will first do an exam in order to identify which tooth is infected and what caused it. Your medical history and X-rays will also help us plan your treatment. With a plan in place, we’ll begin the root canal treatment. First, we will numb the area around your infected tooth. If you have anxiety about the treatment, let us know and we can discuss our sedation options. Once everything is numb, we’ll clean out the infected pulp and disinfect the area. To protect you from further infection, we’ll put in a seal and a filling to strengthen the tooth. Sometimes a dental crown is necessary to strengthen the tooth.

After Root Canal Therapy

Once your root canal treatment is complete, we’ll give you aftercare instructions. As the numbing medication wears off, you will most likely feel some discomfort and mild pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually all you need. Whatever you feel will be significantly milder than what you felt before the root canal. Continue your normal oral hygiene routines, being gentle around the treated area. If you experience symptoms like severe pain or swelling, please contact us right away.
