Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and easy measure that can be taken to make dentist appointments more relaxed and painless. Laughing gas is administered via a small mask that is placed over the nose a few minutes before the treatment begins and continually releases a safe combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen throughout the treatment. Patients are conscious during the entire appointment and because the effects of laughing gas wear off within a few minutes of breathing normally, it is safe to drive home following the appointment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation involves taking a pill before your treatment begins and entering into a groggy, dream-like state. Patients are conscious during the procedure but it’s not uncommon to become so relaxed that you fall asleep. Usually, if this happens, most patients can be easily woken up to answer any questions. You may remember the procedure or only remember walking out of our practice at the end of your appointment.
IV sedation works well for many dental treatments because the amount of sedative that is administered can be controlled by your dentist. IV sedation can be used for minor treatments or more advanced procedures where the patient is rendered unconscious for the duration of the dental service. Patients usually remember very little if anything from appointments where IV sedation is used, and a friend or family member is usually required to stay during the appointment and drive you home afterward.
