Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and easy measure that can be taken to make dentist appointments more relaxed and painless. Laughing gas is administered via a small mask that is placed over the nose a few minutes before the treatment begins and continually releases a safe combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen throughout the treatment. Patients are conscious during the entire appointment, and because the effects of laughing gas wear off within a few minutes of breathing normally, it is safe to drive home following the appointment.
