How Do I Know If I Need a Tooth Extracted?
November 25, 2020 7:19 pmThere are some obvious cases when you’d need a tooth extracted — an injury, for example. But some cases aren’t crystal clear. In this blog post, we’ll review the instances when you’d likely need a tooth extraction, along with ways we approach tooth extractions at Uptown Dental Studio in Dallas, TX.
When Would I Need a Tooth Extracted?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth. Some of the most common reasons why you’d need a tooth extracted are:
- Decay
- Damage from an injury or other trauma
- Overcrowded teeth
- Infected or impacted wisdom tooth
Wisdom Teeth Extractions in Dallas, TX
Your wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that erupt when you’re around 17-20 years of age. Located at the back of your mouth near your throat, wisdom teeth can grow in crookedly and be tricky to clean. This leaves them susceptible to infection and decay. In many cases, your wisdom teeth may not erupt at all. Wisdom teeth that are impacted under your gums can be very painful as they try to emerge. They can also interfere with the alignment of your other teeth. In many cases it’s best to have them removed to prevent these and other potential oral health problems. We perform wisdom teeth extractions right here at Uptown Dental!

- Take any prescribed pain medication as directed
- Apply ice to any swollen areas to aid pain management
- Do not drink with straws – they can aggravate and dislodge blood clots formed at the extraction site
- Rinse your mouth with salt and warm water to ward off bacteria
- Eat soft foods until the extraction site heals
- Refrain from smoking
